The fall semester 2009 is well under way. I hope yours is progressing well as we move forward and can see the end of the semester approaching.

2009 CMENC Kickoff Attendees André Thomas speaks to CMENC Fall Kickoff

On September 26, Tennessee Tech University hosted the third annual CMENC Fall Kick-Off Event. Our attendance numbers were down a bit, but the weather was not terribly cooperative. In spite of that, we had forty in attendance, and had a variety of sessions offered. We started the day with Dr. Andre Thomas, director of choral activities at Florida State University, who spoke to us about a positive approach to rehearsal techniques. The day then continued with sessions on resources for choral repertoire, copyright laws, job interview skills, strategies for band booster organizations, classroom management, special learners and the IEP, piano skills and a panel discussion with in-service teachers. The conditions outside may have been dreary, but the atmosphere inside was upbeat and enthusiastic.

Next year, the Kick-Off will again be hosted by Tennessee Tech University. It will be scheduled in late September, as soon as the 2010 football schedule is determined. If you have any ideas or requests for session topics, please feel free to contact me, or any of the officers. Also, if you have any ideas for presenters (including chapter advisors!), let me know. This is a worthwhile conference, and the fact that it is focused on the needs and concerns of pre-service teachers makes it even more so.

You are invited to share news about your chapter activities. Let us know about any service activities or special projects that your chapters are involved in. Two of the activities the TTU chapter has done are a CD recording project and our own BMI-John Lennon songwriting contest. The CD is a recording of a variety of musical selections performed by solo artists or small ensembles from our students and faculty. The recording will then be sent along with other items in “care packages” to military personnel serving in Afghanistan.

The songwriting contest was a fundraiser to choose the TTU entry into the BMI-John Lennon Songwriting Competition. This was the first year, but we had seven singer/songwriters who performed their original works. It turned out to be a lot of fun for all involved, and we are looking forward to next year’s competition.

Give a Day, Get a Disney Day

In conjunction with our 2010 Biennial Conference in Anaheim, California, CMENC members can take advantage of a wonderful opportunity to experience Disneyland through its “Give a Day, Get a Day” program. Disney hopes to inspire families to volunteer in their communities during 2010 through this first-of-its-kind program. One million people who perform volunteer service for a participating organization will receive a free one-day admission ticket to a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park. Disneyland is only six miles from the conference’s host hotel, the Hilton Anaheim.

This program serves as a wonderful opportunity to motivate chapter attendance and service within the community, all in a spirit of ‘advancement of music in America’.
