Summer is a time for rest, relaxation and refreshing body, mind and soul. It is also a time for looking back on the recent academic year and looking forward to the next.

Looking back: The CMENC state meeting was held during the TMEA conference on April 16, 2010. We had much-improved attendance this year with an enthusiastic group of students and advisors. Mr. William Johnson, a doctoral student from The University of Memphis, gave a very informative and encouraging talk on outreach activities and ways to grow our CMENC chapters. He discussed ways for CMENC to reach out to the public schools through events such as Music In Our Schools Month. Generally, he encouraged and challenged all CMENC members to take up their role as leaders in music education.

Our second order of business was to elect new officers for Tennessee. We were introduced to each candidate, and then, as the candidates were running unopposed, voted to approve the slate. The new officers are:

Looking forward: The final topic of discussion was the Annual Tennessee CMENC Fall Kick-Off Event. Students offered several ideas for sessions, as well as positive feedback on the previous events. Again, it was stated that this is a great professional development conference for music education majors at all levels. The purpose is to provide Tennessee’s pre-service music educators with an opportunity to have their questions, concerns and issues addressed, along with time to meet and fellowship with colleagues who will someday be their professional colleagues.

The Kick-Off Event will be held at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville beginning Friday evening, September 24, and Saturday, September 25. I have scheduled the Friday for supper and socializing to accommodate those who travel long distances and need to stay overnight; however, everyone is invited. Food, fun and fellowship!
