Title:Meeting the Standards - Assessment Strategies for the Elementary General Music Teacher
Details:The discussion surrounding assessment in music is not a new one. For decades, music educators have been debating the proper use of music aptitude tests. In more recent times, the rise of standards-based education has caused music teachers and supervisors to search for ways to adequately assess for the standards set forth by local school districts, state departments of education and national music organizations. The general music teacher faces a particularly daunting task of teaching and assessing, in many instances, hundreds of students. And, this task must be accomplished while seeing students as little as one time a week. Adding to the confusion is the fact that the approaches to assessment in general music are either unclear or confounding to many music teachers. This presentation will present and define and strategies of assessment as they specifically apply to the music teacher wishing to implement a new, comprehensive assessment plan. Particular emphasis will be placed on the use of portfolios as a manner of tying the various assessment strategies together to constitute an inclusive assessment plan that involves both teacher and student.

Title:The Contemporary Vibraphonist: Converting Piano Music to the Vibraphone
Details:When the contemporary vibraphonist plays today, chances are that he is treating the whole pallet of the vibraphone keyboard like a piano and is using the new multi mallet technique to effect this transition. Granted, the vibraphone does not have the range that the piano has, but there are many avenues to be explored which would suggest the required sononities that the piano gives off plus additional sononities of the vibraphone itself. Chiasson will discuss his original four mallet and multimallet system and will demonstrate converting piano music to the vibraphone as well as choice of mallets for different acoustic situations, proper pedaling, jazz harmony and articulation, and new sonic possibilities for the Contemporary Vibraphonist. He will conclude with a solo performance and an invitation to the audience to question and to perform with him.

Title:Playing Our Instruments Consciously: Working with, or against Our Bodies As We Play
Details:This talk will consider the ways in which we can vastly improve the quality of our instrumental playing and teaching by considering how our bodies are designed to work and tailoring our approach to playing based on this information. This idea is not only useful for injury prevention. The greater dexterity, and mental and physical ease that such an approach engenders can only help us achieve more excellence in musical performance and find more pleasure in the act of playing and performing. Areas considered will include sitting (how are we grounded, centered, balanced), breath, working with (or against) gravity, stillness vs. motion, the line(s) of easy motion, how our hands and forearms are connected, and ideal finger shapes.
